The variation of the second person singular in the classroom of the final years of elementary school in the municipal network of Itajaí, SC

In this article, we present the results of a study on the variation of the pronouns tu and você in the subject position in the speech and writing of eighth and ninth grade students from a public school in Itajaí, SC. To this end, we used the assumptions of the Theory of Linguistic Variation and Change (according to Weinreich, Labov and Herzog (2006 [1968]) and Labov (2008 [1972]). In the conditioning of the phenomenon, linguistic variables (subject completion; verbal agreement; semantic feature; discourse genre) and extralinguistic variables (student's place of birth; gender; individual) were investigated. A total of 3,558 data were collected, of which 65% were from the pronoun você and 35% from the pronoun tu in the syntactic function of subject. We performed quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data, in addition to proposing a teaching unit for the work based on variable uses with a view to expanding students' knowledge about linguistic variation.
