Verbal-visuality in the doubly interpreted scene:
performance and theatrical translation-interpretation in Libras of “Chico and Flor”

This article investigates the performance of two Brazilian Sign Language and Portuguese Language translators-interpreters (TILSP) in the production “Chico e Flor”, by Cia. Biruta de Teatro (Petrolina-PE), through the lens of the dialogic perspective of language. The objective is to analyze how the concept of verbal-visuality manifests in performative translation-interpretation. Methodologically, it consists of a qualitative and descriptive case study, presenting the theater company, the performance, and the subjects within the selected excerpts. The analysis of photographic and dramaturgical records demonstrates that verbal-visuality occurs through the inseparable fusion of signs, facial expressions, the use of classifiers (linguistic), and integration into the production's scenery and aesthetics (visual). The study concludes that the interpreters’ performance transcends interlingual and intermodal mediation, constituting a “double interpretation” (interlingual and performative) that establishes the TILSP as a scenic agent rather than a mere accessibility appendage.
