Abstract

This article aims to examine the work Poemas para ler com palmas (2017), written by Edimilson de Almeida Pereira, as an example of performative language that transcends canonical categories of literature. Through the analysis of selected poems, a sense of movência is seen to be constructed by words—specially language acting upon language itself—thus revealing an expanding literary field. To this end, concepts proposed by authors such as Florencia Garramuño (2012), Barbara Cassin (2010), and Edimilson de Almeida Pereira (2010) are placed side by side in an effort to conceive literature as something in motion, rather than reducing it to what is merely lived and experienced. This discussion addresses implications for studies of oral performativity, incorporating Cassin’s perspectives on performativity in language alongside Pereira’s cantopoemas. Therefore, it is argued that clapping is not a mere complement to reading or to the literary text, but rather an untranslatable element that is nonetheless communicable through bodily, imaginative, and sensory experience.
