Abstract

This article proposes a theoretical characterization of the role of music recommendation systems used for playlist creation in streaming platforms. Based on the notion of programming philosophies, I argue that these platforms develop a specific position in the discursive field of music radio that does not fit in the traditional roles performed by programing directors and curators in hertzian radio. To evidence this, I analyze a bibliographical revision of proposed models of music recommendation systems. Finally, I reflect on the ways this programing philosophy shifts the conditions of music media and challenges efforts of regulation of tech industries and cultural diversity.
