The Grupo Investigação Filosófica (GIF), through its laboratory, GIFLABS, is launching a set of seals designed to indicate, on the object itself, that artificial intelligence was used in its production. The seals are open and free to use, like the copyright symbol or Creative Commons licenses, and anyone may use them in articles, books, magazines, academic work, artworks, and other productions, without asking for permission. They were made for the community, and it is in circulation that they acquire their meaning.

The standard seal bears only the symbol and signals, in general terms, that AI was used in the object. Two variants specify the nature of that use. The instrumental use seal (uso instrumental) marks works in which AI served as a supporting tool, and the substantive use seal (uso substantivo), those in which it contributed to the content itself; both variants also state that the result was reviewed by humans (revisado humanamente).

The proposal starts from a simple observation. AI use already runs through intellectual and artistic production, and the relevant question is no longer whether it happens but how it happens and how it can be declared transparently. A seal visible on the object lets readers, reviewers, and editors know in advance what kind of production they are dealing with; it also lets authors declare their use of AI without it sounding like a confession. It is this normalization of transparency that the seals aim to encourage.

The seals are already in use in GIFLABS publications, such as Virtualia (magazine), and are available for download in white and black versions, with transparent backgrounds.
