Abstract

The creation of anatomical teaching models began in the eighteenth century, but a revolution in realistic, durable, articulated and low-cost models was achieved by Louis Auzoux using a papier mâché technique from 1822. Today, Auzoux’s models are scattered in different parts of the world – in medical schools and in important medical museums. In Brazil, Auzoux’s models can be found at the Medicine Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and Pharmacy Museum of the Federal Universisty of Ouro Preto. A pioneer in the teaching of pharmaceutical sciences in Brazil, the School of Pharmacy of Ouro Preto has always valued quality by using good laboratories for pharmaceutical practices and for teaching human anatomy. The Museum has an important collection of anatomical models, many from the nineteenth century and by leading French manufacturers, including Dr Auzoux. papier mâché models such as the eye, ear, nervous system and a complete human model are currently on show.
