Abstract

The first museum in Ouro Preto, created by Vicente Racioppi (1886-1973) in conjunction with the Historical and Geographical Institute of Ouro Preto (IHOP), is a little-known and under-appreciated fact, although a singular page of the local history. The "Casa de Gonzaga," which currently houses the Municipal Archive of Ouro Preto (AMOP) and the Tourism, Industry, and Commerce Secretariat (STICOP), occupies the premises where the IHOP and the 1st Ouro Preto museum were installed, yet it provides no reference to this fact. It is one of the "places of memory" in Ouro Preto's Historical Center most visited by tourists, referencing the perennial poem "Marília de Dirceu," written by the inconfident Tomas Antonio Gonzaga (1744-1810), a classic of Brazilian literature, and by researchers who use the AMOP collection. Contemporaneous with Racioppi was the work of Gustavo Barroso (1888-1959), who effectively implemented pioneering government interventions (state and federal) in the "sacred city" for the preservation of its historical heritage. The municipal government of João Veloso (1860-1954) also took pioneering legal measures for preservation. The aim of this study is to revisit this fact and suggest the creation of a permanent exhibition in the "Casa de Gonzaga," using the numerous existing photos that illustrate this article, to create another "attraction" and further enhance the iconic building of Ouro Preto.
