Abstract

The city of Ouro Preto, located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, is considered a region vulnerable to significant geological risks that are unknown to the population. In order to raise geotechnical awareness among the Ouro Preto community, the Engineers Without Borders - Ouro Preto Center, in partnership with student organizations from the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP) - Geoconsultoria Jr and the Geotechnical Academic League of the School of Mines (LAGEM) - as well as with the municipal civil defense, carried out a project named "Café com Ciência" (Coffee with Science). The main goal of the project is to alert the population about geological risks, such as landslides and rockfalls, to which the city is exposed (especially during the rainy season). In addition, the project aimed to bring the population closer to the University and to intensify the execution of projects among the participating entities. Thus, informative lectures, social media videos, and training on the subject for the Ouro Preto community were used as instruments to achieve the main objective. It is important to note the lack of knowledge among the Ouro Preto community about the risks to which they are exposed and how to proceed in emergency situations, making it necessary to intensify actions like this in order to prevent greater risks to the residents of the area.
