Abstract

This article seeks to identify the relationship between Gonçalves Dias biography written by Antonio Henriques in his Pantheon Maranhense and construction not only the memory of the poet, but also of Brazilian identity. The analysis of the work takes into account the role played by biography in the nineteenth century, namely, to assist and complement the history and fundamental part of this key, recommended by the biographers of the time to understand the contribution that this text to the left formation and consolidation of memory of the poet from Maranhão and more than that, in developing a Brazilian identity formed from the regional element.
