Abstract

In 1960 emerged and developed a new field of research within the historical knowledge: the History of Women. The advent of this area of study has brought the discussion and use of specific categories to analyze the historical particularities of the condition of women in various societies and in different historical periods. Categories such as women, social roles, gender and patriarchy began to be discussed, analyzed, interpreted and applied in studies of women’s history and the humanities in general. This article will address more specifically the concept of gender and patriarchy, tracing some historical considerations on its use in women’s history and demonstrating the common hermeneutical category in academic research.
