"Grown to such excess":
Three Brazilian Renditions of Romeo and Juliet

This article examines three Brazilian translations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet rendered on stage in the last two decades of the twentieth century, in three very different contexts: Antunes Filho’s adaptation, which enacted a subtle protest against the crumbling military dictatorship when the play was staged under his direction in 1984; Grupo Galpão’s internationally famous production in 1992, which inserts the play in the mambembe tradition and the rural context of Minas Gerais; and Ariano Suassuna’s rewriting of a booklet version of the story of the lovers, translating the play into the Brazilian Northeast code of honour. The theoretical framework of this discussion relies on concepts such as globalization, identity and cultural memory.
