Abstract

This article presents the results of a pilot study that aimed to raise emerging stereotypes in the speech of 18 high school freshman students in a regular school from Belo Horizonte - MG. The respondents were shown 33 images classified in five categories: (1) heterosexual and homosexual families, (2) gender roles in society, (3) affective-sexual gender orientation, (4) gender expressions, and (5) social behavior of genders. By filling in a table, the respondents registered their impressions on each image. Based on Queer Theory, it was verified that the prevailing view reflects the hetero-normative pattern of human relations - despite dealing with the multiplicity of identities and expressions of genders, these students judge and act with prejudice. It seems necessary that the school confronts openly issues related to identity and sexual orientation to effectively fulfill its social role.
