Abstract

Music is present, since the beginning, in philosophy. One of the philosophers that approaches the musical art is Plato, who we know largely considering his references regarding music as a determining factor in the formation of the philosopher. However, in this paper, we intend to elucidate the music in Plato's Philebus, a dialogue that presents a heterodox interpretation on music, describing it as lógos to unfold the true through dialectics of musical tones and of its own harmony, symmetry, proportion, numerical determination - concepts important in conducting this dialogue. To do so, we interpret the platonic dialogue based on Hans-Georg Gadamer's interpretation, showing music not as a part of the new platonic paideia, but as a way to express the truth and the good.
