Abstract

This study deals with the politics of recognition specifically with Nancy Fraser's thesis of recognition of status. To approach this model of recognition, we used some specific points from Charles Taylor's well-known perspective of identity recognition, a work that underlies some of the most progressive studies in political theory in Brazil. The relevance of the theme lies in the greater issemination and importance that have been attributed to the politics of recognition and the notion of identity in political debates in Brazil. The study aims to present some of the main points of Nancy Fraser's perspective, seeking to show that she can enrich studies in the area by pointing to a very refined conception of eliminating inequalities. To that end, we also present some crucial points of Taylor's inspiring work. Finally, we point out Fraser’s model as crucial for joining contemporary recognition policies and we add that her criticisms on Taylor’s model contribute to a greater elimination of cultural inequalities resulting from non-recognition understood as status subordination.
