A identidade pessoal importa?

Uma leitura de Paul Ricoeur e Derek Parfit

Abstract

This article aims to address the notion of personal identity from Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) and Derek Parfit (1942-2017). Ricoeur addresses the importance of personal identity in relation to the constitution of a narrative identity, which would configure the actions taken over time. Parfit (1942-2017), in turn, presents arguments against the nature and importance of personal identity. He highlights that when one looks for an answer with respect to permanence over time, what is important is the survival of the individual submitted to experiments based on science fiction, and not the importance of personal identity as the “same” person. In view of that, this article exposes how Ricoeur argues that the permanence in the time of personal identity is linked to character and maintenance through the maintained word, which can be brought together by the composition of a narrative plot.
