For the strengthening of a pedagogy of linguistic variation
reflecting on variation in the BNCC in light of the principles of Educational Sociolinguistics
Abstract
This article aims to analyze the treatment of linguistic variation in the National Common Core Curriculum (BNCC), in light of the principles of Educational Sociolinguistics and the Pedagogy of Linguistic Variation, identifying limits and potentialities for its didactic transposition in Portuguese language teaching. This is a qualitative, documentary-based study developed within the research project “Foundations for a pedagogy of linguistic variation: language, variation, and social values (2024–2025).” The analysis shows that, although the BNCC acknowledges linguistic diversity across different stages of Basic Education, its guidelines tend to assume a generalist character, favoring normative or reductionist readings of variation. As an outcome, the study proposes organizing the skills into four articulating axes and argues for the centrality of teacher education in the implementation of a pedagogy of variation guided by sociolinguistic justice and the empowerment of school subjects.
