Abstract

This article highlights the importance of understanding the linguistic mechanisms involved in the Portuguese Language and Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), with a focus on sociolinguistic implications and the inclusion of Deaf people. From a qualitative–interpretivist approach, the study analyzes how taboo terms operate, considering social, discursive, emotional, and identity-related factors. The findings indicate that the translation of these often stigmatized terms is essential to strengthening the expressiveness and cultural representativeness of the Deaf Community. In addition, the study emphasizes that the development of a more comprehensive and inclusive vocabulary in Libras depends on the critical incorporation of such elements in language teaching. It argues that overcoming linguistic taboos contributes to more realistic and respectful linguistic practices, fostering inclusion and dialogue among different linguistic communities. The complexity of this issue, combined with the scarcity of linguistic research on the use of taboo terms in Libras, highlights the urgent need for deeper and more specific investigations into the sociolinguistic dynamics involved. Accordingly, this study advances discussions on the pragmatics of Libras, suggesting that sign language be mapped in a more comprehensive and critical manner, particularly with regard to taboo terms and their relationship with the sociocultural context of the Deaf community. It concludes that expanding research on the sociolinguistic interfaces between Libras and Portuguese is urgent.
