Abstract

The platonic attempt to subordinate poetic forms to philosophy is not merely illustrative of an inclination of Greek thought; it constitute, in a decisive way, a tension that defines tragically the philosophical reflection on arts till our days. Plato's work is crossed by acid critics to tragic authors, painters and actors, but it is also defined by a gesture that would determine philosophical thought: the banishment of the mimetic poets from Plato's ideal city, and the distinction between rational language and poetic language. This paper aims to offer an introduction to the platonic critic of mimetic arts, considering it reach and establishing its limits.
