Call for papers for Radiofonias 2021 issues
Issue 2021.1 – Monograph “College radios in times of attacks on science”
College radios operate in Brazil since the 1950s, even before the regulation of educational broadcasting, in 1962. Cartography in progress (Kischinhevsky, Mustafa, Pieranti and Hang, 2018) indicates the existence of 100 stations belonging to 87 institutions of higher education in the country. Of this total, 71 are in operation on AM and FM channels with internet-transmitted replication, while the remaining 29 have programming broadcast exclusively online. More than half began to transmit in the 21st century, evidencing not only the growth of the field of public and educational communication, but also the strategic interest in scientific, technological and innovation dissemination.
Despite this rapid expansion, college radios face numerous obstacles, such as: poor infrastructure, lack of personnel, uncertain financing and institutional instability. To these were added the challenge posed by the political attacks of organized groups against the university, defamed as a space for the construction of knowledge and social and cultural inclusion. The post-truth of the disinformation campaigns sponsored by the social networks establishes a new level of barriers for the field of college radio that, still, fights for its legal recognition and for greater support for its formative role, not only in Brazil but also in many other countries.
In this context, Radiofonias encourage submission of articles that propose theoretical discussions, case studies and/or constitute developments of research projects that include various aspects of college broadcasting, such as:
- College radios, regulation and public and educational communication policies
- Institutional challenges, financing alternatives and the role of cultural support
- University radio stations as a space for experimentation and professional training
- Looking for the public: the importance of speaking beyond the walls of the university
- Ethnic and gender representation in college radios
- Experiences of broadcasting nets, joint coverage and content exchange
- Radio journalism on college radios
- Interfaces between college radios and independent local and regional music circuits
>> New deadline for submission: February 28, 2021
Issue 2021.2 – Dossier “30 years of radio studies – The role of Intercom’s Radio and Audio Media Research Group”
Edited by Debora Cristina Lopez, Eduardo Vicente, Lena Benzecry e Marcelo Kischinhevsky
After decades marked by the production of technical and memorialistic books, radio finally became, in the 1990s, the object of more consistent and systematic academic reflections. Radio broadcasting is gaining ground as a research object at post graduate level, in Brazil and in several other countries, where its popularity as a medium remains strong despite the advancement of digital platforms.
A milestone in this new phase of radio studies was the creation of the Radio Research Working Group (now called Radio and Audio Media Research Group), of the Brazilian Society for Interdisciplinary Communication Studies (Intercom), in 1991. Since then, the group meets annually during the Brazilian Congresses of Communication Sciences, offering an important space for the exchange and production of knowledge about radio broadcasting. Between 1991 and 2020, no less than 941 scientific articles were presented at the group, from the most diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives, such as the history of the medium, the broadcasters or its professionals, the radio journalism, musical radio and radio in the context of media convergence. The group is the most active of Intercom, having produced, throughout its history, 24 collective books.
In this context, Radiofonias encourages submissions that propose reflections on radio that include themes such as:
- The historicity of radio studies in Brazil
- The internationalization of radio and audio media studies
- The insertion of radio and audio media as an object of research at the master's and doctoral level
- New theoretical and methodological perspectives on radio and audio media
- Gender and ethnicity in radio research
Deadline for submissions: June 27, 2021
