The Body On The Scene

Considerations on Hamlet and Julius Caesar

  • Pedro Sussekind
Keywords: Shakespeare, Hamlet, Caesar, Tragic, Comic

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to discuss Shakespeare’s thematic and rhetorical usage of the presence of the body (the dead body, reduced to its mere corporeality). The references for this discussion will be two plays, written approximately at the same period: Julius Caesar and Hamlet. From the perspective of theatrical composition, this usage is linked to the creation of an uncomfortable effect, which can develop in a comic or in a tragic register.
