Abstract

Micro-pauses are treated in this research as audiovisual pauses characterized by their individual durations lasting from imperceptible only up tto he threshold of perceptibility. If overused, they can produce clearly perceptible effects and changes in the phenomena they parasitize. But what if they do not so accumulate? Do they, in their imperceptible capacity, possess any potency? (1) Gathers quotes and summaries of fictional episodes where a contagious form hijacks mental and informational processes (CCRU, Pat Cadigan); introduces the possibility of constructing a paranoia linked to imperceptible movements and sounds (GX Jupiter-Larsen). (2) Presents quasi-fictions in the theory form: the zero-line as a gothic plane of productivity (Mark Fisher), to be confused with death (Georges Bataille) and extrapolated in the figures of sleep and lapse. And then, Morse code as a communication strategy with this plane. (3) Formulates an applicable definition of micro-pause, postulating it as non-micrometric and below the micro time scale. (4) Seeks to bring together the previous three approaches and describe two artworks in process and a sound art event, all three by the author.
