Abstract

In this article the author explores the idea that the most important role of sound archives today is to be a part of the practices of sound circulation that are enabling are organization of the senses and a redistribution of the sensible. This proposed function of the archive emerges due to the way new technologies have created forms of self production that have dispersed the archive away from formal institutions into the privates phere. In order to explore this relation between the archive and the new forms of self-production of music, the author uses two examples from Colombia: champeta music and the labor of a person who works on independent productions for a series of public andprivate institutions.
