Abstract

The objective of this paper is to investigate the categorial analysis created by Amie Thomasson and the ontological conception of Arthur Danto about works of art, showing the common ground and the differences between the two philosophers. The common ground is that both of them aim to develop an ontology of art that does notimply the exclusion of any empirical manifestation of art. The main difference is that Thomasson, unlike Danto, does not provide a definition of art. It is intended to demonstrate that the concept of “art world”, modulated by historical narratives, is what makes Danto’s theory more successful than Thomasson’s in order to apprehend the concept of work of art and to address the peculiarity of contemporary art.
