Abstract

In this article, we will analyze marcuse´s position in a debate that places the author in some degree of collision with the Living Art movement and the New Left. Based in his formulations on the function of art in the one-dimensional society, highlighted in the works Society as a Work of Art (1967), Art in the One-Dimensional Society (1967) and the chapter Art and revolution, from the Counterrevolution and Revolt (1972), we will highlight issues to the political role of art, its relationship with society and its emancipatory potential, especially in the author’s defense of aesthetic form and artistic alienation.
