Abstract

The purpose of the essay is to examine Theodor Adorno's conception of art and literature in order to configure the concept of aesthetic autonomy, as well as to outline the scope and meaning of such a theory. To this end, the criticisms made by the philosopher to the defending conceptions of the notion of engagement will also be examined - notably those of Georg Lukács -, in addition to those of Jean-Paul Sartre and Bertold Brecht, to whom he criticizes the notion of “strangeness” for considering it partial. Adorno intends to radicalize such a concept, thus intending to be more radical than the radical Brecht. Adorno intends to radicalize such a concept, thus intending to be more radical than the radical Brecht. In this sense, the autonomous work has political significance since it is understood - by its mere existence - as an attack on existing society.
