culture and erotic education in the texts of the "student" Walter Benjamin

Abstract

Walter Benjamin’s texts written between 1910 and 1914 register his intense militancy in the German Youth Movement, particularly in the faction leaded by educator Gustav Wyneken. That was a movement that intended to restitute to the youth its singularity and importance inside a project of renovation of the idea of culture. In this discussion, the question of sexuality was highlighted. Like his fellows, Benjamin defended a new erotic culture and education. Therefore, the main intention of this article is to draw the general outlines of Benjamin’s participation in this debate, which initiates a couple of themes that will persist along the rest of his lifework.
