Touching knowledges: Similarities between analyzing processes and interpretation practices

  • Alberto Sampaio Neto
Keywords: Musical analysis, Practice, Interpretation

Abstract

On a brief refl ection this essay shows some correspondences between musical analysis processes and performance practices. One consider both as understanding movements, and one sees their interactivity as a complementary relationship, diverse from the current (and misunderstood) notion that separates these two fundamental kinds of approaching of a musical piece. The act of playing (which includes the moments of practicing and studying a musical piece) is not dissociated of analyzing processes. Given that musical understanding is fundamentally a “non-verbal” task, this essay touches points which are important for “analyzing-performers”, such as knowledge of music and its verbalization, and the degree of “openness” of any kind of score.
