Semiótica goodmaniana e os modos de presença
Abstract
In this article we develop an approximation between the semiotics elaborated by Nelson Goodman and Rodrigo Duarte's diagram of the "modes of presence in the contemporary aesthetic phenomena". We start from the understanding that the mode of irrepresentation is linked to the symbolic operation of exemplification. We explain this connection, showing how the conceptual gain involved motivates the present investigation - irrepresentation, beyond its link with sonority, is established as a locus of aesthetic formalism related not only to musicality, but also to abstraction, a mode that favors symbolic operations that display their own qualities, rather than reference external objects. We introduce goodmanian concepts and draw parallels beyond the exemplification-irrepresentation pair. Thus, we establish three other pairs: (goodmanian) representation-presentation, description-(duartian) representation, multiple reference-perpresentation. We discuss D'Orey's idea that exemplification marks the presence of the aesthetic in general. Defending the catalyzing function of exemplifying operations (especially expressive ones), we nevertheless argue in favor of our initial position, in which exemplification has a specific place, together with the irrepresentation mode. The operations of fictitious denotation and representation-as are then presented, paving the way for a future discussion on the combinations between the modes of irrepresentation and presentation, indicated by the arrows of pantomime and concrete music in Duarte's diagram.
