Uncanniness or Empathy?
Notes on the Problem of Historical Knowledge in Walter Benjamin
Abstract
The purpose is presenting the criticism W. Benjamin makes to the use of the empathy method in the search for historical knowledge. Empathy will be associated to the theme of “nacherleben” in Dilthey and counterposed to the Nietzchian “unzeitgemäss”. Empathy will then appear as an attempt at a totalizing knowledge that is incapable of the uncanniness required for a knowlege trying to overcome the nostalgy of idealistic totatily
