Sublime and desublimation of art:

Marcuse's dialectical appropriation of the Kantian concept.

Keywords: Sublime, Desublimation, Art, Marcuse, Kant

Abstract

Herbert Marcuse coined the concept of desublimation of art in an evident appropriation of the Kantian sublime and Freudian sublimation. In a dialectical movement, at the same time that he subverts these two concepts of tradition, Marcuse also takes hold of what seems to him to be potentially transformative in both. The present text aims, therefore, to expose the desublimation of art focusing on the dialectical appropriation that Marcuse makes of Immanuel Kant's sublime.
