The essence of the theatre
Abstract
In this paper, Eugenio Barba analyzes the “underground history” of the twentieth century theatrical tradition and his own artistic trajectory, highlighting the “path of refusal” as his professional ethos and that of his ancestors — the protagonists of the Great Theatrical Reform of the early XX century —, of those he defines himself as “nothing more than an epigone”. Starting from the question “what remains of theater?”, he draws the lines that define the essence of the theatrical tradition he and his partners of Odin Teatret invented.
