Abstract

This paper aims to outline some aspects of the creation and of the structure of the operetta (1850-1870), theatrical genre that, despite having been created in France, travelled throughout the world and played a crucial role in Brazilian theater history. By bringing unpublished information in Portuguese for the Brazilian researcher, this paper proposes to ponder on some aspects of the genre that help to understand why these plays were so successful in Brazil and were adapted to Brazilian culture in such a unique way — to the point that it has generated fruits that would determinate the directions of Brazilian theater in the following decades.
