the relationship between spiral and linear time for the protagonist of “Pride” by Ibi Zoboi
Abstract
This article aims to relate the concept of spiral time, as established by Leda Maria Martins (2021), to the novel “Pride” by Ibi Zoboi, published in Brazil in 2019. The literary work is a retelling of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”, narrated from the perspective of Zuri Benítez, a young black New Yorker of Caribbean descent. Two performances in the novel will be analyzed: a ceremony from Santería and the funeral of the character who serves as a mentor to the protagonist. The article also examines the relationship with linear time and how these two differing ideas of time influence Zuri’s life path and choices. The notion of decoloniality, based on the work of Nelson Maldonado-Torres (2018), is briefly discussed from the performances presented in the novel, while also reflecting on the significance of addressing these themes in a book aimed at a young adult audience. Finally, the article concludes that rituals, along with other cultural practices, keep the protagonist connected to her ancestry even as she strives to find her place in a capitalist world.
