A tour of the Mathematics Olympics: from the origin to the current scenarios in the world and in Brazil
Abstract
This article presents a theoretical-bibliographic research that aims to make a brief tour of the Mathematics Olympics. We started with its origins, from the 16th century, period of the renaissance in which some mathematicians carried out public disputes that originated the mathematical competitions, we went through the 20th century, when the Mathematics Olympics gained international proportions and we ended up in the present day, presenting the main olympics held in the international scenario, highlighting the main competitions held in Brazil, giving greater emphasis to the Brazilian Public School Mathematics Olympics (OBMEP), which currently constitutes one of the largest Mathematics Olympics in the world. As conclusions, we make use of our experience in the Regional Coordination of OBMEP and in the realization of Regional Mathematics Olympics to make some considerations about the role of olympics as instruments to encourage the teaching and learning of Mathematics.
