Learning mathematical content in Higher Education: the roles of Special Education teachers
Abstract
The work of Specialized Educational Services (SES) teachers in Brazilian basic education is guided by national guidelines and institutional regulations; however, there is no specific documentation for higher education. The objective of this study was to characterize the responsibilities of SES teachers in the Mathematics Teacher Education programs at the State University of Paraná (Unespar). This is a qualitative field study conducted through semi-structured interviews with five SES teachers working at the institution’s five campuses that offer the program. The results, based on regulations, the Index for Inclusion, and the interviews, highlight four categories of responsibilities: identification of needs, didactic-pedagogical mediation, technical-methodological development, and guidance related to mathematical content, revealing the scope and challenges of these professionals’ work in promoting inclusive education.
